Keeping the Avon half of the navigation well fed with water is a big task, and the summit of the canal is 40 feet (12 m) above any reliable source of water. Engineer John Rennie designed a steam-powered using a steam engine from Boulton and Watt. REstored by volunteers, it is now the oldest Watt beam engine in operation.
